Lifting and Positioning AHU Sections in Torbay

Smart Solutions for a Challenging Lift

Our team recently travelled to Torbay to assist a long-standing client with the lifting and precise positioning of four 1-ton air handling unit (AHU) sections. With logistical constraints and access limitations to contend with, we had to devise an innovative plan to complete the project efficiently while keeping costs and lead times in check.

Rethinking the Plan: Avoiding Road Closures

Initially, the plan was to position the crane on the road to complete the lifts. However, the site was located at a busy junction, meaning a road closure would be necessary—an option that would have involved a lengthy approval process and increased costs for the client. Determined to find a better way, our team explored alternative solutions that would allow the lift to proceed smoothly without causing major disruption.

Innovative Crane Placement: Making the Most of Limited Space

Following a detailed site assessment, we identified a small access compound that provided a viable alternative for crane placement. Despite the tight space, we successfully manoeuvred and rigged a 7-ton Tadano crane into position. This compact yet highly capable crane was the perfect choice, allowing us to carry out the lift safely and effectively—without disrupting traffic or requiring a road closure.

Precision Lifting and Expert Coordination

Once the crane was in place, our team set to work. Each of the four AHU sections was lifted onto a scaffolding platform with absolute precision. From there, our experienced lift-and-shift team took over, carefully transporting the units into the building. Working closely with the client, they ensured that each AHU section was positioned exactly to specification, meeting all technical and operational requirements.

Minimising Disruption, Maximising Efficiency

At every stage of the operation, we focused on minimising disruption to the surrounding area while maintaining efficiency. By avoiding the need for a road closure and optimising crane placement, we ensured the project remained on schedule and within budget. Our seamless coordination and expert handling meant that the entire process—from lifting to final positioning—was executed with speed and precision.

Delivering Tailored Solutions for Our Client

This project highlights our team’s ability to adapt to challenging environments and deliver bespoke solutions that meet our clients’ needs. Through innovative problem-solving and meticulous execution, we successfully completed the lifting and positioning of the AHU sections—reinforcing our client’s confidence in our expertise.

Conclusion: A Testament to Ingenuity and Expertise

The Torbay project is a prime example of our ability to overcome obstacles while maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency. By avoiding costly and time-consuming road closures, leveraging the capabilities of the Tadano crane, and executing a well-coordinated lifting operation, we delivered a smooth and successful outcome—another testament to our industry-leading expertise.
